The Move More project in Reading

This project supports schools and parent carers to encourage children to be more active.

Nearly 40% of children living in the central west and south areas of Reading are overweight or obese when they leave primary school, figures show. Some neighbourhoods in the central west area are among the 20% least healthy in England.

There are concerns that following the COVID-19 lockdowns, a significant number of children and young people will have been less active which could have a negative impact on their physical and mental health, and potentially on their future educational outcomes.

Brighter Futures for Children has teamed up with Public Health England, Get Berkshire Active, Reading Borough Council’s transport team and other providers to help our schools get their pupils fitter, healthier and happier by moving more. We are asking primary schools in Reading to sign-up for a commitment to increase active participation and we want to make it as easy and inexpensive as possible for them to get children to move more.

Schools are provided with lots of information and links to resources that focus on encouraging children to walk, cycle or scoot to school, to eat well and to be more active at school and at home.
