For when you find things hard to cope with
Getting mental health support early can help prevent difficulties from getting bigger. This page briefly outlines emotional and mental health triage (EMHT) for children and young people.
Feeling stuck or overwhelmed?
Lots of young people find things tough at times.
You might notice:
- worries or anxiety that don’t go away
- feeling low, stressed or overwhelmed
- big emotions that feel hard to manage
- school, friendships, or daily life feeling harder

What is EMHT?
Emotional and mental health triage (EMHT) is when professionals work together to think about what emotional and mental health support might help you.
It’s about helping you get help early and being clear about what happens next.
What EMHT looks like
EMHT is:
- A way to work things out together
- Focused support that feels right for you
What EMHT is NOT:
- It is not a diagnosis
- It is not a test
- It is not a crisis service
What you say about how things feel for you is important. You will be part of the conversation about deciding what support you need.
