Gender pay gap reporting

Brighter Futures for Children is required to report on its gender pay gap position annually here: BRIGHTER FUTURES FOR CHILDREN LIMITED – Gender pay gap service.

The below narrative should be read alongside this report.

The gender pay gap (GPG) for Brighter Futures for Children (BFfC) – Directorate of Children’s Services (DOCS) in Reading Borough Council – at 5 April 2025 reflects the structural composition of the workforce rather than unequal pay practices.

BFfC had a predominantly female workforce (85%), with women significantly represented in front-line, lower-paid care and support roles. These roles, typical within children’s social care and education services, traditionally attract higher numbers of female employees.

Conversely, the smaller proportion of male employees are comparatively more represented in higher-paid or specialist positions, which contributes to the overall gap.

The data therefore reflects occupational segregation and sector-wide workforce trends, rather than disparities in pay for equivalent roles. BFfC maintains robust job evaluation and pay governance arrangements, ensuring compliance with equal pay legislation.

The organisation remains committed to reducing inequalities where possible, including promoting gender diversity across roles, supporting progression opportunities, and continuing to monitor workforce and pay data to inform targeted action.
